THE ROADING QUESTION.
w ■■- DEPUTATION WAITS ON THE PRIME MINISTER. By Telegraph—Press Associati'oa. Auckland, November 18. i A deputation of representatives from the Auckland Industrial Association and the Chamber of Commerce waited upon the Prime Minister and placed before him resolutions passed at a recent conference of the twb' bodies with reference to the roading question. " The view* of the deputation!," said Mr. Massay in reply, "are lange-ly my views." Roading before settlement was a good principle, but where men had no capital the Government foumi' it necessary to give settlers something to do. He pointed' out that the Parliamentary grants now for roading were no- less than, the aveiage foir some years past, and he was pleased to say that legislation hadi been pissed only this year for furtheir assisting- settlors in new country. Mr. Massey quoted a section of the State Guaranteed Advances- Act, which provided' that a sum not exceeding £•250,000 should be set aside yearly for roading by local bodies, for development purposes. Next year Parliament would:' be asked to consider the Laeal [ Bodies- KIT, which would contain a provision for the taking- over of such arterial roads as wore recommended by | the Public Works Department. | Referring to the King Country, the | Prime Minister said that more 'moneyhad? been spant there- for development purposes, particularly 1 in the Taumarunni" district, than in any other electorate. The Government fully recognised, he concluded, the importance of opening up country by road's where dairying was possible.
