No trace Ims yet been found of the body of Captain Pope, assistant harbormaster, who is supposed to have fallen oil' the Wanganui wharf on Wednesday night.
Dr. A. W. Izard, of Wellington, will leave Auckland oil 31st December for Tonga, where he has accepted a three years appointment as chief medical officer to the King of Tonga. Mr. D. Robertson, secretary of tlw Post Oll'ice, lias resigned the position of Commissioner of Old Age Pensions, and he will be succeeded by Air. 0. C. Vaehe. who will also be Commissioner of Widows' Pensions and Military Pensions.
Death has removed a familiar and respected figure in our town in the person of Mr. James Gardiner, until recently in business in Devon street. His end came with painful suddenness late on Saturday night. He had been about town during the day. and retired to bed at his son's residence about 10.30 o'clock, shortly afterwards lie was seized with a fit of coughing. Dr. Fookes. who had been attending the deceased for the past six mouths, was called in, but Mr. Gardiner never rallied, passing away at 11.15. The late Mr. Gardiner, who was 62 years of age, was ,born in Flemington, Victoria, and came to New Plymouth 19 years ago, having been in business for practically the whole of tha't time. TTe is survived by his wife, and two children. Mr. Frank Gardiner, of Bine street, and Mrs. T. Brockleluirst, of Christcluirch. The interment will be a private one. No inquest is necessary. Dr. Fookes having certified as to the cause of death.
According to a cablegram in the Sydney Sun, Dr. Woodrow Wilson refused to listen to any Presidential election returns until 8 o'clock in the evening. At 7 o'clock lie sat down leisurely to dinner with his family at his home in Princeton (N.J.), and is reported to have Strictly adhered to his resolution not to hear any reports until the stipulated hour. It is considered probable that. Mr. Bryan will be Secretary of State in the new Cabinet, Dr. 11. W." Wiley Secretary of Agriculture, and Mr. L. D. Brandcis, of Boston, Attorney-General. Governor Marshall, of Indiana, the Democratic nominee, has been elected ViceJ'resident. Mr. William Sulzer, Democratic member of Congress, has been elected Governor of New York Slate. 1! is reported that Colonel Roosevelt is to be made editor of the New York Press at an annual salary of £20,001). Willi regard to the future of Mr. Taft the general belief is that he will resume his law practice. "Extravagantly high as is the .salary which it is reported that Colonel Roosevelt will receive," comments the Sim, "it is no more than that which is actually .paid to Mr. Arthur Brisbane, editor of Hearst's New York American, who may safely be said to be the highest, salaried newspaper man in the world."
