LAWN TENNIS.

m» COMING EVENTS. Davis Cup challenge round (British Isles ■v. Australasia)— Melbourne, November 28, 29, 30. New Zealand Championships.—Hastings, December 2(i, 27, 28. Australasian Championships. Hastings, December 30, 31, January 1. Hastings Club Championships and Handicaps.—Hastings, follows Australasian championships. Pahiatua Club Championships and Handicaps.—Pahiatua, January 1 and 2.

The Park Termis Club had a successful opening on Thursday afternoon, when, despite the counter attractions and the somewhat unpromising weather, there j was an attendance of over forty members. The tennis courts and croquet lawns are in much better condition than they were at this time last year, a result due to the effective work put' in during the off-season by the committee and caretaker. The weather during the past few weeks has not been at all seasonable, and lawn making has therefore not been easy work. A week or two of line weather, with frequent rolling and cutting, should make a big difference to the grounds, which are prettily situated, and, as the vice-president in his remarks at the opening ceremony said, are a distinct credit to the club and an improvement to the Park and the locality. For transforming what was before a wilderness into beautiful lawns, the club have performed a valuable public service, and are deserving of the thanks of the community/ and the greatest measure of success. The Park Club set up a ladies' committee on Thursday, consisting of Mrs. Scanlon, Misses Howell, Doile and Lewis (tennis) and Mesdames T. C. List and R. J. White (croquet). Trophies have been presented for competition by the president (Mr. 11. Cock) and the chairman of the committee (Mr. T. C. List). Dr. Leatham has also kindly donated a guinea to the funds of the club. New members to the number of over twenty have recently joined the Park Club. The Fitzroy Club will, weather permitting, throw open its greens for play next Thursday afternoon.
