THE MOKAU CLAIMS.
• MATTER. NOT YET SETTLED. The impression has gone abroad, and it • has been stated in some newspapers, that the monetary solatium of £3OOO- reconi- | mended by Parliament to be paid to Mr. ; Joshua Jones was in termination of all ■ the difficulties in connection with the Mokau property. This, Mr. Jones states, is a mistake. The money consideration had no relation to the long-standing l legal dispute with regard to the title, but was in respect of the repeal of Mr. Jonw'e private statutes, unknown to him. These statutes affected portions of the land not included in the litigation. It is clear, Mr .Jones contends, that the committee did not consider by any means that there had been a termination of proceedings, inasmuch as the report states that the committee does not recommend that Parliament should give him a right of action by special statute, for the reason that "the petitioner has not yet exhausted his legal remedies." Mr ..Tones stntrs that, certain persons of influence, both here ami in London, will see the matter through with himself.
