ADVENT OF SUMMER.
NEW PLYMOUTH ROSE SHOW. There was an aroma of summer in ;l)o Brougham Street Hall yesterday. -ide was a mass of blooms, roses of >ouxitlcss variety predominating. It was .lie New Plymouth Horticultural Sociity's annual rose show, and the whole made a delightful color effect. Notwithstanding the recent unseasonable weather, many of the blooms were in very Eair condition, especially those comprised in the exhibits staged for exhibition only by the local nurseries, and Messrs. Newton King, S. W. Shaw, G. P. Robinson, P. W. Sandford and Mrs. McGaliey. The judge (Mr. C. E. Rasmussen, of Aramoho) expressed himself highly pleased with the exhibition on tire'whole, which, although on a smaller scale, was well in keeping with the standard set by other shows in the Dominion. Mrs. C. H. Weston judged the decorated tables. The Morshead Nursery Co. was represented by an attractive array of roses (over 100 varieties), pot plants and some choice Japanese maples, asparagus and maiden-hair ferns, feathered hyacinths, and other varities. Roses, flowers and pot plants were also seen in great profusion in Messrs. Duncan and Davies' exhibit. The big array of roses were a feature, and they included some fine specimens of a novelty rose, "Juliette." Undoubtedly the collections of these two nurseries added considerably to the spectacular effect of the whole arrangement. Mr. Shaw jeonfined, himself to roses, and his magnificent exhibit was I the cynosure of all ,eyes. Mr. Newton I King also had a fine collection of roses, | and in addition he showed some beautiful pot plants, and a fine lot of rhodo-, deadroiis. His roses included a fine bloom of "Betty," a rose 'that in prel vious years has not idpne well .locally, [ but this year has come on. splendidly. The champion bloom of the show came from the garden of Mr, R. J. White. It J was a magnificent (light apricot in color, and perfect in shape* A particularly pleasing feature of tlie show was the attendance, wiich was considerably in excess of that , of last'year's exhibition.
