ENTERTAINMENTS.
EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE. Picture-goers are reminded that tonight is absolutely the lust occasion the A.B. Masterpiece, "The Sands of Dee," will he presented, also the last screening of the scenic beauties of a Thousand Miles Through the Rockies and the full supporting programme. The usual matinee will he held at 2.30 to-morrow, when a complete change of programme will be shown. THEATRE ROYAL PICTURES . At tile Theatre Royal last night the star attraction was the presentation of Professor Lozhski's film of "Beetles." This proved to be one of the most extraordinary exhibitions "of animal instruction and adaptability ever conceived. Performing fleas and performing mice are comparatively ordinary adjuncts to civilised entertainment, but it has remained for this .patient and enthusiastic German savant to break in beetle as an entertainer. The trained beetles play a whole tragedy in the course of a quarter of an hour, centring round the elopement 01 a stag beetle with a shinybaok lady bottle winch leads up to international eonpheations between, the two raees of beetles. The little actors waltz, make love intrigue, duel, and fight with an intelligence that is unbelievable until it is seen. The film has been openly characterised a* a "fake," but the producers have offered to produce the beetles in their performance to any responsible parties at Rome and the London papers after exhaustive investigation, have declared it, to be an absolutely genuine performance. Nothing so supreme in animal action has been seen before in the picture world. The remainder of the programme is of tlie usual hMi class standard comprising «cenic. dramatic and comic films of an interesting and aimw'.ng nature. The intelligent beetles will again bp on view to-night. "OUR REGIMENT." New Plymouth peoplo should note that the proceeds of the performance of Our Regiment" are to go to the Territorials in New Plymouth itself, who are managing the business end. The Stratford amateurs, assisted bv Captain Steven. of Hawera, have given months of steady preparation, and much of the success of this laughable military comedy lies in the fact that both Captain and Mrs. Lanipen have previously made J brilliant hits in the identical roles which tliey fill in the piece to-day. Mrs. Lanipen is a charmingly natural actress, and a charming woman, and her part suits her as though written for her. Captain Lampen has. of course, studied "Guy Warrener" on the spot, and his interpretation of the soldier dandy is simply "great." Mrs. Dobbinson is a very assertive lady in her own household, and generally gets her own way. As a masterful mistress, Mrs. Uniacke is splendidly placed. One might go right through the east and bestow lavish praise everywhere, but theatre-goers will doubtless like to make the discoveries themselves. "Our Regiment" is a very cleverly written drama, and it is cleverly acted, and staged with full scenic effects. Box plan at Collier's.
