CROSS COUNTRY.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' FIVE-MILE KACE. The High School Boys' Steeplecha.Be race, of five miles, was successfully got off yesterday afternoon. It speaks- well for the enthusiasm of the school that 01 entrants faced the starter, and it reflects credit on the stamina of the boys attending the school, that practically all —there were one or two defections—finished. The race started from the High School and the course was-along the road until the Henui bridge was crossed, when it doubled hack across hilly country and open meadow, ibetwcen the Old Hospital Road and the Henui River. The race was watched from tho High School tower, which afforded a good view of -the country traversed. Tho limit man (King) was despatched at 4 o'clock, and the six scratch men, Colson, Imee, Kelly, Grey, Pott and A. Little got away ten minutes later. The winnizf competitor (J. Hine) arrived home at 4.84y 2 , and hard on his heels came Howell (4% minutes handicap) at 4.35. Hine, who ran a very plucky race, covered the greater part of the distance unpaeed. He had a handicap of 8 minutes, his actual time thus being 3Cy 3 minutes. The limit man (King) was third, breasting the tape at 4.36. The next eight competitors to finish arrived home in the following order and position: Marfell, senr. (3min), Terry (5y 2 min), and Pott (scr.) at 4.36% o'clock; Kidd (5 mm), Marfell, junr. (smin), Weston (5 mm), Hamblyn (3y„min), and Matthews (6min) at 4.37 o'clo'ck. Pott put up the fastest time, cutting out the distance of ahout 5 miles in 26y, minutes. The -times of the other scratch men were: Bruce (27min), Colson and Kellv (29 min), Little (3iy 3 min). Cfrey did not finish. The winner was played out, but many of the other boys finished in fairly good fettle. It is understood that the distance was not measured, and that it was_ possibly short of the estimate. Hine thus secures the 1911 cup. Points were awarded in the race in connection with the competition for the Senior aggregate cup, which was undecided at thd annual sports, meeting. Out of those in the running up for the cup, Pott was the first to arrive home, notching 5 points. Bruce was the second" of the senior championship' to breast the tape, and takes 3 points. Colson gets one point: The position of the first two is: Braed 23 points, Pott 21 points. It has been decided to hold the senior high jump (competed for at the annual meeting) over again,- and this leaves the slap- still-undecided.
