BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The New- Plymouth Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) presiding. Members present were: Councillors H. Gilbert, J. C. Morey, J. T. Mannix, H. Stocker, W. Ambury, J. Hartnell, J. H. Buttimore, F. Jackson, and J. Kibby. ST .AUBYN FINALLY MERGED. Finality has at last been reached ia connection with the merging of St. Aubyn Town Board District in the Borough. In connection with the matter the following telegram was read from Mr. J. Hislop, Under-Secretary for the Department of Internal Affaire:—"l have to inform you that by section 30 of the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Public Bodies Empowering Act, 1912, the St. Aubyn Town District is abolished, th» corporation of the board dissolved and the area of the town district included in l the Borough of New Plymouth on the issue of an Order-in-Council adding area to a ward of the Borough. The properties, liabilities, contracts and engagements of the St. Aubyn Town Board shall become those of the New Plymouth. Borough Council. Such Order-in-Council will shortly be issued." Commenting on the letter, the Mayor expressed satisfaction that this step finally completed the Council's work in the matter of the Greater New Plymouth Scheme. The inclusion of the odd area, of 25 acres (originally excluded) would' save a large amount of work. No adjustment would now be necessary,
WATER FOR WESTOWN.
A deputation of two (Messrs. J. D. Sole and Robertson) waited on the Council on behalf of Westown ratepayers desirous of having their properties connected with the Borough water supply. Mr. Sole said that the Counoil must have misunderstood their previous representations on the subject. All they desired was to he allowed to draw sufficient water off the main' to fill their' tanks at such times as authorised by the Council. Probably they might require the water only once a month; possibly once every fortnight. In justice to the ratepayers in the locality the same privilege should be extended to all as had already been given to others in the district. His own application was the first to be received by the Council, and yet it had been turned down in favour of others. The distance from the main to those houses to be connected to no case exceeded five chains, and the cost would not be very great. If the request was granted, it would not inconvenience other consumers.
According to the Mayor, the position had changed since Mr. Sole's original application had been lodged. There wa* now ample pressure in the main in question. On the motion of Cr. Arnbury, seconded by Cr. Buttimore, it was decided to authorise the immediate carrying out of the work. BELL STREET . Mr. D. Hutehen applied to have Bell street formed and connected with the water and sewerage system in accordance with the promise made at the auction sale of the Avenue Road Reserve, as he making arrangements to build immediately upon his property there. In stating that provision had been made in the loan proposals for this work, the Mayor said he did not see any reason why the work should not be gone on with. It was decided to proceed with the work. THE OLD ORDER CHANGETH. On the motion of the Mayor a special order was passed making the following alterations in the names of streets in the St. Aubyn-Moturoa Ward:—Standish street to Ballancc street, Newton street to Whitelcy street, McLean street to Seddon street, Watson street to Massey street, Barrett Road to Pioneer street, Eliot Road to Tukapa street. REPORTS. The monthly reports of the Works Committee, the abattoirs manager, the Borough engineer, and other departments were adopted unamended. GENERAL. Application was made by the secretary of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the Council to allow its tarring staff to tar the tennis court at the hospital grounds. The Board would.supply the tar and sand.—The application was approved, subject to the Board paying the cost of labor. The Council confirmed the adoption of a special order declaring gorse, blackberry, ox-eye daisy, fennel and ragwort noxious weeds.
