BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY REPORTS. Monthly reports covering various activities will I)i! submitted at to-night's meetings of the Borough Council as follows: — - ■■■ i WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee recommends that, subject to certain conditions, Mr. A. E. Sykes be permitted to construct a right-of-way of not less than eight feet throughout the length of Messrs Okey, Son ami Arnold. Ltd.'s building; that the Taranaki Garrison Band be informed that the Council cannot supply free lighting and water to band-room, but that, in view of the circumstances, the subsidy will be increased by £5 for the current yearj that the sum of £25 be paid to the Taranaki Education Board, the contributing authority of the New Plymouth Technical School, for the purpose of increasing the efficiency of technical classes formed under part 7 of "The Education Act, 1908"; that the amended adjustment of the county bridge loan over the Hurworth area he confirmed; that in view of the special circumstances set out in his letter of October 17; and on his undertaking to pay all fees and water charges as from the present date, Mr. Paton be granted until May, 1913, within which to connect his property in Ridge Lane with the sewers; that ten- | ders be invited for the removal. of nightsoil, rubbish, etc, within the original' boundaries of the borough for a term of three years, the terms to be the same t as those of the previous contract, with

the addition of a condition that the : con r tractor will attend to premis.es within such enlarged area as the Council may from time to time fix; that the borough engineer be authorised to erect a shed in the Gill street yards for the road grader; that the electrical engineer be instructed to fix an extra street light in Currie street, opposite Currie Lane, and to place the light near Sargood. Son and Ewen's in a more suitable position. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE.

The Electric Light Committee recom'mends that the Chief Postmaster be informed that the Council have no intention of placing its lighting and power circuits underground; that the manager of the Empire Picture Company be informed that the Council cannot at present accede to his request for reduction of charges for current supplied to the Empire Theatre and the Theatre Royal;' that subject to the electrical engineer being satisfied with the test of the machinery recently installed, the tender of Messrs Turnbull and Jones, Ltd., for the supply of turbine and generator for the sum of £1251, in "terms of their letter of October 16, be accepted. POWERHOUSE EXTENSIONS.

The electrical engineer (Mr. H. Black) reports:—During the past month the two 21in mains have been moved to their permanent position, and the 60in wall frame built into the forebay. The second COin sluice has also been built in. As soon as this piece of concrete work is hard enough to stand the pressure, water can be turned on and the forebay tested. The extra length of stand pipe which the contractors have to supply is not yet to hand. Fixing this pipe and testing connections to forebay are all that is required to complete the pipeline contract. Twelve men have been employed during the month. The total expenditure on the work to date is £lO,llß. ' RESERVES COMMITTEE.

The Reserves Committee recommends that Mr. T. Sole's tender for painting cemetery chapel at a cost of £l3 10s be accepted; that an application having been received for a long lease of the property, three months' notice terminating lease of Old Waterworks reserve be given to Messrs Barnett Bros.;" that separate tenders be invited for lease ,of fold Waterworks reserve, comprising the parts marked G., H., J. and 8., containing 19 acres 0 roods and 21 perches, more or less, for terms of one year, five years and ten/years, the Council reserving the right to all metal and erection of crusher and access thereto; that the engineer be instructed to submit plans and estimates of addition of two rooms and verandah to sexton's cottage; that the engineer be instructed to survey the unsnrveyed portion of the cemetery at the back of the chapel, and submit same to this committee. VARIOUS WORKS. In the course of his monthly report the borough engineer (Mr. C. Skitrop) • states: ; Morley street filling—This work should |be completed in about eight days. Some 740 cubic yards have been carted from Vivian street and. 1216 from Young ; street. ■ i King street sewer—The low-level seweris now being laid, and with good weather should' be completed in.three weeks. i i Leach street sewer—This sewer, is completed from Gover to Eliot streets. The furze at the "Old Waterworks hasi been grubbed and all. the fences have !been repaired. The waterworks' care- 1 taker reports everything working satis-; factorily. Three sewer connections have; been laid this month. " ~ i
