EXPORT OF HIDES.
RISE IN THE PRICE OF LEATHER. By Telegraph—Press Association. ■} Palmerston North, Last Night. A conference of representatives of thft tanning industry from ail over the Dominion was held here to-day. It wm. resolved to increase the price of leather by a penny per pound. It will make * difference to wholesale makers of about 3s per dozen pairs of boots. The retuon for the increase is the scarcity of owing to the quantity being exported. Hides are going chiefly to Vancouver and the export trade is said to be almost exclusively in the hands of on* firm, whose headquarters are at Auckland. Tanners suggest that the situation might be saved by an increase on theduty of imported boots; otherwise the local boot-making industry is seriously threatened. Tlie president of the Tanners' Conference informed a Manawatu Times' reporter that it is not unlikely there will be a furtluu- increase in the price of leather shortly, if hides do not become more plentiful or ths suggested export duty placed on rawhides. New Zealand tanners required over four thousand hides per week. SOME RECORD PRICES. Palmerston North, Last Night. At the hide sales at Palmerston North to-day ox hides jumped up by a penny per pound, prices now being up to s%d, equal to nearly £2 5s per hide. Cow- v hides increased y a d to %d, and fetched up to 7%d, equal to nearly 30s each. Calf skins sold at fis per skin.. This is an advance of 3s on cowsides and 5s on ox hides.
