A London cablegram states that it is officially announced that Major-General fsir Harry Barron, Governor of Tasmania, has been appointed Governor of West Australia in succession to Sir Gerald Strickland.

A London vable states that Mr. G. T. Milne has been appointed the Commonwealth Trade Commissioner. He is at present inquiring, into British trade in Central America. He proceeds to Australia next year. A Press Association wire from Wellington states that the following have been appointed King's Counsel:— Messrs' F. Earlt and J. R. Reed, of Auckland, J. W. Salmond (Solicitor-General), A. Gray and C. B. Morrison, of Wellington.

•Mr. E. Page, of Eketahuna, who lias recently been appointed a Stipendiary 'Magistrate, will be permanently stationed in the Main Trunk district.* His district will lie between Taumarunui and lTunterville. He will probably commencs by relieving Mr. Kerr, S.M., at Wnnganui.

Tn St. Mary's Church yesterday afternoon. the Rev. A. H. Colvile officiating, Mr. Charles Bond, fifth son of Ate anil Mrs. C. Bond, of Gill street, was marlied to Miss Lily Brooks, daughter of Mr. S. Brooks, of Leach street. The bridesmaids were Misses Vera Brooks (sister of the bride) and Ivy Bond (sister of the bridegroom). Mr. Freak, of Wanganui. was best man and Mr. V. Jury, of New Plymouth, groomsman. The friends of Professor Gilruth, Administrator of the Northern Territory, have been feeling some uneasiness at what they considered his late arrival back from a trip to the interior of the Territory (says the Melbourne Argus), but Mr. Atlee Hunt, Secretary to the Department of External Affairs, has explained that there is no reason for any misapprehension regarding Professor Giirutli's safety. Mr. Gilruth, he said, was not expected to return before October 20. He, with Professor Spenser, had loft in a motor car to explore the Barclay tableland, on the McArthur river. No date had been fixed for his return, inasmuch as no idea could be formed of the nature of the difficulties that woidd be experienced by a motor car on such a journey. - A wide circle of friends will regret to • hear of the death of the Rev. John Ross, an old resident of Turakina, but latterly of Wanganui. Deceased, who was in his 83rd year, was well-known and highly respected. The deceased gentleman was for many years Presbyterian minister in charge of Turakina qnd district. He was born at Caithness, Scotland, where lie received his preliminary education. His subsequent education was received at the University and New College, Edinburgh, studying four years at each. II« was ordained in 1800 'by the Presbytery of Tain,_ Rosshire,. anil came to New •Zealand in the same year per ship Resolute, Captain Wallace, from Glasgow.' Mr. Ross was first appointed to Masterton, in the Wairarapa, where he was the first resident minister of the Presbyterian Church, his district extending over a wide range of country, sixty miles by forty miles wide. Mr. Ross resided in the Wairarapa for five years, when he was transferred by the' Presbytenv of Wellington to Turakina district, where he resided until his retirement from active church work. The rev. gentleman was for many years a member of the Wanganui Education Board. Mr. Ross is survived by his widow and a grown-up family of three sons (Dr. Ross, of Petone, Mr. Charles Ross, of Rangitautau, and Mr. John Ross, at present studying for the ministry), and five daugthen (Mesdames B. P. Bethbridge. Turakina; Mrs. Ewen McGregor, Turakina Valley; and Misses Janet, Jane, and Wilhelminn Ross).
