NATIVE RATES.
THE DIFFICULTY OF COLLECTION. The difficulty in tin- way of collecting native rates, and the need for some amendment to the Act so as to place the native on the same plane as the' European in regard to the payment of rates has becn r exereising the minds of members of the Clifton County Council, us well as other local bodies," for some timo past. The Clifton County Council, at a recent meeting wrote the members for the .district on the matter, and at yesterday's meeting various letters were received on the subject. Mr. J. B. Bine, M.P., wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council's communpation, and in reply stated that anything in his power to place greater powers in the hands of controlling local authorities would have his immediate attention. He was acting., in conjunction with Messrs. Okcy, Wilkinson, and Pearce, in the matter, and would notify the Council when any matters of interest arose.
Mr. Okey also notified .that he had communicated with the Hon. W. H. Berries, Minister for Native Affairs, on this important matter, and enclosed his reply-
The Hon. W. 11. Herries said the question would have the serious attention of
'is Government during the recess. It would greatly assist matters, he added, if the Clifton County Council would kindly indicate the difficulties they experienced in collecting the rates., and if they would suggest any amendments to be made in the Act.
Cr. Hides said that it was easily known where the difficulty was. They could not get the money. / Cr. Sullivan also referred to the difficulty in getting the names of the owners on the roll. ' -
The clerk (Mr. Vaughan) remarked that the Council had got judgment against two natives, but so far had not got the money. Cr. Sander thought that it should be possible, as in the case of Europeans to get an order from the Court to'sell the land in default of payment of rates, instead of having to get the consent of the Native Minister to such a course.
