The many friends of Dr. A. K. Newman. M.P., will regret to learn that Mrs. Newman is seriously ill. Dr. Wohlmann, Government balneol*gist at Eotorua, will visit Europe shortly, and has been granted twelve months' leave of absence for that purpose. Mr. David Crewe, ex-Mayor, was appointed Mayor of Pahiatua by the Borough Council on Monday night for the remainder of the late Mayor's (Mr, \V. W. McCardle's) term of office. By the Rarawa, which will reach New Plymouth this morning, will arrive the members of the Plimmer-Denniaton Dramatic Company, who open a two-nights' season at the Theatre Royal thin evening. The death occurred yesterday morning, at Woodville, of Mr. William Blisn, a very old resident. Deceased had been in business in Woodville since 1883. H* leaves a family of five, all of whom ar« married. Mr. J. Liddell Kelly, who for som* time has been acting as locum tenens for a member of the editorial staff of tho Auckland Star, resumes bis old positiw of editor of the Ashburton Guardian, for lour or five months, pending a permanent appointment. Mr. C>. V. K. Adams, India, a New Zealander, has just been selected to serve on a commission formed by the Government of India, to enquire into the best way of managing and looking after pilgrims at the big religious fairs that are held all over India. He managed a very large fair at Allahabad last year, for which he got a great deal of credit, and at which he, had over two million pilgrims to look after. Not a single hitch occurred. He also had charge of a similar fair at Meerut lately.
