WAVERLEY-W AITOTARA RACES. Glorious weather was experienced for the Waverley-Waitotara annual meeting, and the attendance was very large. The fields were largo, the starting excellent, and the racing keen and exciting. The; dead-heat in the principal handicap and close finishes-in-the other races spoke volumes for the good work of the handicapper, Mr. Geo; Morse. Speculation was very heavy, over-taxing the totalisator staff, and Uio club will have to face a big bill for increased stand accommodation and better-betting facilities next year. The Marton Brass Band is a greatly improved combination, and their playing earned rounds of applause. Prior to the running of the Wilson Stokes a' hack tethered in the weighing enclosure attempted to jump the-picket fence, and disembowelled himself. The unfortunate animal was quickly shot. The Ilawera trainer, 0. Cox, had a field day, Timothy. Sampan and Princess Flo winning races. The rules of the Jackson Stakes required the "winner of the Wilson Stakes, Morton Memorial, or any other race" to carry 141b penalty. The absurdity of the rule is evident, and is apparently a misprint, but the stewards had no option but to follow the rule. Needless to say there was niuch grumbling when winners of races months back had to carrv 10«t.
The following are the details of the racing:— MORTON MEMORIAL MAIDEN RACE, of 80 sovs.; second 10 sovs. from the stakes; .weight-foi'rage. Seven furlongs. Mr. J. O'Sullivan's eh m Princess Flo.

Princess Flo was up with Sir Donald as they came into the straight, and was well clear at the distance. White Crane came fast in the straight, and headed Sir Donald, but had no chance of catching Princess Flo, who won by over a length. Sir Donald was
a similar distance away third, just in front of a bunched lot, and Millbanks whipped in the field. The favorite, Eastwind, ran well to the distance, and then gave up the hopeless chase. Before reaching the seven-furlong post Smilax struck hard and : fell back. Timothy was steadied along the back, and Aviatrix and Moahau were in command. Shoemaker fell three furlongs from home. , Moahau led into the straight, but was immediately challenged by Timothy,, and, the latter lasting longest won all out by : a bare length. Passing the stand, the order was. Master Laddo, Eurocco, Cornelian and Sampan. ( Eurocco joined Master Laddo at the six furlong post, and the pair were three lengths oat from Sampan and Cornelian The latter made a forward move three furlongs from home, and, as the field bunched on the turn, got a lucky run on the rails and joined Sir Laddo as they straightened up. At the distance Cornelian had his head in front, but the favorite was not done with, and came again. Both horses raced abreast to the post, the judge's verdict, "a dead heat," being greeted with acclamation. Sampan 1 was three lengths away third, and Eu-1 rocco close up. Time, 2min. 15 l-ssec.

The field raced to the course proper spread out like a file of cavalry, and when half the distance had been covered Lucerne joined
I Galtee, and Royal Simon put in a bid on f the rails. A splendid race to the post saw Lucerne, nicely handled by his popular owner, land the stake by a long neck from the fast-finishing Crawford, who was a similar distance in front of Ro "! .Simon. The rest were right on Royal
