THE TRANS-CONTINENTAL RAILWAY.
By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 28, 9.20 p.m. Sydney, October 28. Hoskins & Co.. Lithgow. will supply 10,000 tons of rails for the Transcontinnental railway at £8 13s per ton. Two firms belonging to the American Steel Trust will supply 18.000 tons each at £8 10s. An English tender was not accepted. PTOMAINE POISONING. Sydney, October 28. Another party of nineteen picnickers at Sans Souci are suffering from ptomaine poisoning through eating sandwiches. Twelve are in the hospital. Both parties are recovering.
UNREST IN NEW GUINEA. Received 29, 1.25 a.m. Sydney, October 29. Advices from German New Guinea state that there is much unrest. The natives threaten to wipe out the white settlements. They caught a German settler hunting in the hush and carried him inland and killed and ate him. The authorities are taking strong punitive measures.
LARGE ORDER FOR RIFLES. Received 29, 1.25 a.m. London, October 28. The War Office' has ordered from the Birmingham Small Arms Company 45,000 rifles, affording full employment until the middle of 1913. It is stated that a considerable proportion is required for the Dominion colonies.
