Stratford News

JTrom uur Resident Reporter. STSAY PARAGRAPHS Too cold on Saturday for any news to expose itself. A lot might be written about the heavy hailstorms of .Saturday morning, but one could hardly warm to one's subject. THE CADETS. . Captain Stevens has received a telegram from headquarters at Palmerston North to say thai, the Cadets will reach here on Tuesday night, not .Monday night. The delay is caused by the people of Rotorua entertaining them for a day longer than at iirst arranged. The arrangements at New Plymouth wjll not, however, be affected in any way.

j " OUR REGIMENT." Folks are often dubious about ''local I shows." Hut the Stratford amateurs are well known 011 the. stage, and have always acquitted themselves ' well. The 'success of "H.M.S. Pinafore" is too recent to need recapitulation, and the great success of that piece 'has stimulated the enquiry for seats'for "Our Regiment," to be produced on Wednesday and Thursday at the Town Hall. This military comedy is a sprightly' piece, and has been thoroughly rehearsed by a strong cast. The stage manager of "Our Regiment" (Captain Lampen) acted in a similar, capacity in "Pinafore," so there need be 110 doubts on this score. Costumes have been specially made, and special scenery has been painted. Some of the scenic effects are very fine, an illuminated fountain being among the most meritorious features. The Stratford or-' chestra and the Stratford Brass Band will supply incidental music. The New Zealand Cadets will give a display on the stage. The box plan at Mr. Grubb's is filling well, and early enquiry for scats is necessary.

| BERNARD'S PICTURES ! • A great programme is announced to commence to-night. A thrillingly impressive film, imparting a lesson that sinks deep into every fibre of one's appreciation, is "Nemesis.' By subtle inducements and defamation of young Dick Adams, Arthur Morris, a well-seasoned and wealthy profligate, succeeds in persuading Nell Chandler to marry him and break her engagement with Dick. Arthur tires of Iter after a bit. takes up his old dissipations and deserts her, easting her upon the world. In the meantime Dick has taken up the practice of medicine, and becomes a celebrated specialist in heart troubles. He meets the wretched Nell wandering sick and homeless on the streets. He leads her to his house,, not knowing who she is, makes a hasty diagnosis of her condition, and recognises her. It is too late, however, to save her life, and she dies of a. broken heart. "From Fireman to Engineer" has a good story, and is well acted. Steve Keardon is fireman on a yard engine, and is trying hard for promotion. He expects soon to marry Molly Duncan, the roadmaster's daughter. Tie finally summons up courage'and asks the superintendent for an engine, but is told that they do not yet think he is qualified. One day the superintendent's litfle daughter, who likes Steve very much, pays a visit to the yard. Child-like, she climbs on to an empty engine, and accidentally starts the engine. Renrdon sees the engine jump forward, and appeals to an engineer of a limited for help, but fails. In desperation ho knocks the engineer down, uncouples the engine, and starts in chase of the runaway, -which he overtakes and captures. Tie brings it and the child back, gets his promotion and wins his sweetheart.
