THE EAST COAST LINE.
THE MINISTER FIRM. % By Telegraph—Prew As»o«i»tion. Wellington, Yesterday. A deputation from Napier and Hastings Chambers of Commerce waited on the Minister for Public Works to-day and expressed great concern at the cessation of work at the Napier end of the Napier-Oisborne railway. The Minister said he regretted he had to face the position of reducing the railway votes, but roads and bridges were more important. No fewer than twenty-three separate sections of railways were under construction, and it would be necessary to curtail the expenditure on a considerable number. Napier had not been singled out for special attack. Expenditure was being stopped on at least ten lines. There was nothing else for it, as money was not available, and if there was any delay in raising it the works could not go on.
