NEGROES AT BAY.

FIGHT- WITH POLICE. Louisville, September 28. A desperate encounter took place last night between the police and three drinkcrazed negroes. One of the negroes was arrested yesterday on a trivial charge, but escaped from the police and took refuge in a house close by, where he found some whisky and started to drink. A policeman'had been sent to re-arrest the black, but when the latter saw him coming he lirert at him, and wounded him dangerously. The policeman gave the riot call, and the police patrol turned out, but they found that the negro was so securely barricaded, and that he was able to direst such a deadly tire on every approach to the house that they dared not .go near him. The pursuers took up positions under cover, about the house where the negro was barricaded, aiulshots were exchanged for two hours! The darkness prevented both sides from seeing if the shots were effective, and firing was at last stopped. ■ 1 '. As daylight approached the police resolved to rush the house, and, at a given signal, a charge was made from several sides at once, and the negro was taken by surprise.

The attackers were astonished to find two other negroes in the house, one of whom attempted to break through the police, and was badly wounded. The other surrendered.
