From uur Kesident Reporter. THE LOAN SCHEME. The Mayor's £15,000 loan, scheme, having been amplified, argued, again added to, and then finally whittled down until scarcely recognisable by people who knew the figures in their bloated state, lias now been defined, and the suggested expenditure is just on £17,000, which is close enough to the first amount suggested for practical purposes. Under the accepted schedule, footpaths, channelling and other improvements which many ratepayers expected, have been deferred until some future date, but it is generally admitted that the works remaining on tlie schedule are necessary. 11l addition to the schedule given below, there is the £OOOO required for the Patea bridge. It is probable that this will be submitted to the ratepayers as a separate issue, lest, the chances of its bring carried should be affected by the general loan scheme, or vice versa. The estimated money required is summarised as follows: £ Metalling , <3147 Kerbing H9O Channelling 255 Kerbing and channelling ISOS Kerbing, channelling and metalling 703 Footpaths 1444 Forming, grading and provision for gravelling 3540 Gravelling IS3I

BERNARD'S PICTURES , The new programme, which commences its season to-night, is marvellously good. There are some very fine films that cannot fail to interest and entertain. Some hair-raising feats of clever horsemanship are included in the film entitled "Gorman Army Equestrians." From the point of view of daring and achievement the feats of the German Cavalry emulated the deeds of even the much-vaunted eowboys of the Wild West. Dramas are always popular, and the present programme features some well-written, wellacted and splendidly-photographed dramatic stories, in which the fine Lubin series, entitled "Won l>y Waiting," is a feature. In this a rich guardian leaves a fortune to a young couple on condition that they marry each other. Neither relishes the alternative of being cut off with a shilling, so tliey become man and wife. They lead a cat-and-dog existence until bv some strange act of Providence they suddenly discover that they really love each other.'" Lieutenant Rose is a hero among heroes in picture drama. Tie figures in the story entitled "The 1 !i.n Treasure." ami the stirring events depicted on the screen will be followed with tense interest. "The Nurse" is a sweetlv pathetic Kilison drama, with 1 a very original plot, while in different vein comes "Scenes on the tapper Thames." -howing all the beautiful aw! historic spots on grand old waterway. Further diversity is lent to the programme by a natural history subject. ''Our Pet Dogs," and there is th? usual set of button-bursting comics.
