A RAILWAY LEAGUE. A meeting is to be held to-night in the Council Chambers for the purpose of forming a Western Taranaki Railway League. The objects of the League are to stimulate interest in railway matters in New Plymouth, more especially in connection with the Round the Mountain route, which has been bo badly emasculated in the Public Works Statement, despite the unanimous recommendation of the West Coast Railway Commission. As we have already admitted the report of this Commission could hardly be adopted in full in the present state of the country's finances, but it must be evident to everybody that the natural outlet for Taranaki is the port of New Plymouth, and the present restriction of local railway development can only be at most temporary. But a good 'healthy League, founded upon the principle that "it's dogged as does it," can be of immense use in facilitating the speedy recognition of the province's claim. There is a material difference between selfishness and enterprise, and Taranaki may rest assured that other provinces will not remain . quiescent in pushing their claims for railway development. This is not, in any sense a parochial matter, and it behoves New Plymouth, realising that "who aimeth at the sky shoots higher far than he that means a tree," to "get busy" with its protestations and representations. We hope to see a large attendance at the meeting to-night, when the aims and objects of the League will be amplified at length.
