DISTRICT NEWS.

Our Own Correspondent*). EGMOKT VILLAGE. I regret to announce tlw death <>l Mrs. Douglas Gyde, of Upland road. The deceased, who was only 21 years of at: ■, had been suffering from a Very painful illness for some considerable time. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. Gyde, who is left with the care of two small children. A large number attended vthe funeral on Monday last.

At last a sign-post has been erected at the Egniont Village corner, with the inscription, -'To Mount Egmont." I suppose the recent visit of the Governor was responsible for this. The signboard, however, was not up many hours before it was removed and another board, inscribed, "To the Monkey House," substituted. I understand that the police had the matter in hand, but the culprits, seeing a hot time ahead, have replaced the original board. Once again the fishermen are at work with the rod and line, and several fine trout have been caught in this locality. The Waiwakaiho, which is within easy distance for local men, is a splendid river for trout.

The annual meeting of the Egmont Village Cricket. Club was held on October 9. There was a poor attendance. The president ('Mr. Geo. Marsh) occupied tho ) chair. It was decided not to affiliate i with the Cricket Association, but that the club would still continue to exist, and play an ocasional match with any team wishing to play them. The meeting decided to hold a practice every alternate Thursday. The subscription was fixed at 2s 6d. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr. Geo. Marsh (re-elected); secretary, Mr. G. H. Marsh; captain, Mr. S. Carter; vice-captain, Mr. 0. Kinsella; committee, Messrs H. Olson, L. Francis, Carter and Kinsella; selection committee, captain, vice-captain and secretary. A hearty vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting. The opening day was fixed for October 24, when, weatker permitting, a good afternoon's enjoyment will be looked forward to.

On Wednesday the Hall Committee held a dance, a fair number being present. During the "evening Mr. Geddes, of Inglewood, contributed a song in kii usual pleasing manner. Missc3 Bunjan and Mace also contributed songs. Mr. Geo. Marsh provided tho music. No doubt this dance will wind up the season, as it is beginning to get rather warm for such vigorous amusement.

PUNIHO. The ioci»l in aid of the school children's prizes, which was held on Friday night, was voted by one and all to be the best that has ever been held at Puniho. The whole of the district between Rahotu and Oakura was well represented. The following contributed to the programme:—Mesdames Vincent and Street, Misses McEldowney (2), E. Knight and R. Hill, Messrs E. Anderson, B. Booker, L. Carey and Capt. Knigh't. The' duties of M.C. were entrusted to Mr. A. Sadler, and could not haYe been in better hands. The supper, which must not be forgotten, was provided by the ladies of the district.

Ai the local creamery the manager is handling 300 gallons of milk daily more than at the corresponding time of last season. Pastures are looking well, feed being now plentiful. Mr. W. Stephenson, of our district, is, I regret to report, in very indifferent health.

The surveyor has just completed his survey of the Upper Puniho road, and we hope the loan recently raised will soon give settlers a better road to their properties. ,

(From an occasional correspondent). What may be* considered as one of the brightest social.functions ever held in the district took place in the schoolroom last (Friday evening, when the annual social and dance in aid of the children's

prize fund took place. The evening wa« us ideal one for the occasion, and quite a large crowd assembled to take part in the festive gathering. The school was well filled, the quota of local residents being augmented by a large contingent from Okato, while visitors from Tataraimaka, Warea, Pungarehu and Rahotu were also present. A good programme had Ibeen arranged and dancing, interspersed with musical items, was kept going until about two in the morning. A splendid supper, provided gratis by the of the district, was partaken of about 11 p.m., the bountiful supply of excellent fare far exceeding the wants of the consumers. Musical items were

rendered by Mesdames Vincent and Street, Misses McEldowney (2), Knight and K. Hill; Messrs E. Andrews, Booker, L. Carey and Knight, all of which were well and enthusiastically received. Mist Dolly Andrews capably presided at the piano, kindly lent for the occasion by Mr. W. Binnie, while extras were rendered by Messrs Andrews and Knight. As master of ceremonies, Mr. Sadler was the right man in the right place, and kept things moving in such lively good humor that there wasn't a dull moment the whole evening. At the conclusion of the affair he tendered to all the thanks of teacher and committee for their kindly support. A special word of praise is due to those ladies who so ably presided over the supper arrangements. As a result of the entertainment the children's prize fund has materially benefited. In order to further improve the grounds round the school the committee purpose holding a similar function on Boxing Night.

WAEBA. The ! annual meeting of the G'lenferrie Tennis Club "was held in the hall on Thursday evening, there being about twenty * present. The balance-sheet showed a small credit, after putting everything in order for the coming season. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. W. Revell; vicepresident, Mr. H. Cochrane; management

committee, Mrs. S. weirs, Misses V. Clothier, K. Corbett, Messrs J. C. Ro'binson and S. Wells; secretary, Mr. K. F. Andrews; selection committee, Mr. J. C. RobinsoiT-and Mrs. 'K. F. Andrews; grounds committee, Messrs T. Fowles, W. Wilson, J. Bennett, AV. Revell. Club regulations were fixed as follows:—i Six. . games to be played for a set; all players' to wear suitable tennis footwear; the club's colors to be pale blue arid white. The subscription for the ensuing year was fixed at 5s for men and 2s 6d for ladies. Tt was decided to hold a picnic on the opening day, November 0, and the neighboring clubs ar.e to be invited. Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Julian, our late storekeepers, have been spending a few days' holiday here before leaving for their future home down the line. A meeting was held last .week in the hall for the purpose of forming a Tailway league. There were about thirty., present, who decided to join the league.' The following committee was ejected:— Messrs A. Ducker,, H. Corbett' and AV. Revell. Messrs J. Burgess and H. Corbett were appointed delegates, to the conference. It is understood that meetings will be held all along the coast to urge the claims of the district on the Government. The undenominational Sunday school concert to be held on AVednesday night. should prove a great success, judging from the energy that is being put into the working of it up.
