20 YEARS TO EVOLVE PERFECT MONTBRETIA. Montbretia of a deep rich orange hue was the outstanding feature of the Horticultural Society's Exhibition at Westminster, i.- * It represented a triumph of patient growing. Mr. H. 0. Davidson has spent twenty°years in evolving this one perfect bloom, and has discarded about 50,000 flowers before arriving at this result. Mr. Davidson was filled with ambition to reproduce this splendid flower of the East directly he saw a specimen. He kept on taking seeds from the successive best flowers of the year until he arrived at a perfect specimen. It changed color through its various stages. At the exhibition there were bright yellow Montbretia representing the fifth year of cultivation. As time went on, the yellow gradually developed into orange, then the petals took more graceful shape, and the flower increased in size - , i. •„ a J Now the perfect Montbretia will find its way all over the world. Mr. Davidson parted one day with 500 to some Dutch enthusiasts. With stems seven feet in height and leaves nearly three feet across, the true Sacred Lotus of the East was another interesting exhibit.
