The Sydney Referee saw a letter from England the other day in which the writer expressed 'himself very strongly concerning the treatment being meted out to the Woottons generally, and he adds that there is no doubt as to racing men generally, in addition to the Press, being of opinion that a big blunder waf made in the suspension of the elder lad for alleged interference at Newcastle The writer adds that with one thing and another Wootton senior' has been so worried that he has scarcely known whether he was on his head or hit heeli, and was so tired of the whole businew that every week he was talking ol straightway booking his passage to Australia. However, he has not made a start yet, but it is by no means improbable that 'he will be here by Christmas. In the "good old days" in England, almost anything "warm" was possible in connection with racing, and Mr. J. Corlett, in the Pink 'Un, says an iniquity in those days was that any man couM enter a horse for a race without consulting the owner in any way. Rataplan, an own brother to »Stockwell, wan in the Great Yorkshire Handicap with 9st 21b, the bottom weight being lew than flat. It was found that he had been entered by "a subscriber" who was in arrears for forfeits. The owner had in the meantime accepted with the horse, and an objection was made to his running unless he paid the money owing by the subscriber. He was allowed to run under protest, and the stewards ol the Jockey Club held that he was not liable for the forfeits. Rataplan, witk all his weight, was beaten by only » neck.
