The Public Works Statement and Estimates were laid on the table of the House last night and the Prime Minister stated that the discussion on them would be tabled at the end of next week.

The Harbor Board yesterday accepted j the tender of Messrs Ward and Co. for the supply of ironmongery and explosives for the ensuing year. A committee was set up to go into the tenders for coal supplies and for cab liire. The following message of sympathy in connection with, the Tasmanian mining disaster 'has been cabled to the Mayor of Hobart by the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. G. W. Browne): —"Please convey to sufferers in the Mount Lyell disaster the sincere sympathy of the people of New Plymouth in the terrible calamity which has overtaken them."

Auckland still issues its "Plague Bulletin." The latest received by the New Plymouth Borough Council covers tile four weeks ending October 12, during which period 307 rats were examined. None. were found to be infected, and none were suspected of infection. The bulletin rejoices that no plague-infected rats had been found at Auckland since May 31, 1911. As the result of representations made by a deputation of gentlemen interested in the iron ore industry which waited on the Prime Minister on Wednesday, and which explained the proposals of the Ethelburga syndicate to develop the Pairon ore industry, Mr. -Massey stated that lie would, on Monday, ask the House to set up a special committee to go into the proposals and report thereon. .

Mr. Edward McHugh. British Laborleader, orator, economist, and Lloy.dGeorge Budget champion, who is on a month's lecturing and organising tour throughout the Dominion under the auspices, of the New Zealand Land Tax League, will speak at New Plymouth in the Good Templar Hall on Wednesday evening. Mr. Arthur Withy, the national organiser for the League, will also visit New Plymouth at the same time.

The individual entries for the New Zealand Competitions Society's Festival to bo held in Wellington next month •number 1152, and the collective entries 1581. Apart from the choirs,, of whom only three are competing, this year the museial entries show an increase. Competitors from outside AYellington are. again very numerous, coming from as far as Melbourne. The judges are Messrs. Sydney Wolf (Dunedin) music, and Mr. Montague (Auckland) elocution. The town clerk is in receipt of a letter from Mr. W. A. Beddoe, the Canadian Commissioner at Auckland, to the effect that he is very much indebted fcr the generous treatment offered the Canadian Cadets during tliiur stay in New Plymouth. He had not yet the definite dates of the itinerary, but would forward them in ample time, when the South. Island had been disposed of. Tliare are .sixty-three boys in the corps, not including several officers, who sometime!-; find it more convenient to stay at hotels.

A committee meeting of the New Plymouth Horticultural Society was held last evening at Messrs. Webster and McKellar's office, when there were present: Mr. S. W. Shaw, President, in the chair, Colonel .Messenger 'and Messrs. J. Paton, G. H. McGahey. Ellerm, H. Dempsey, Bendall, Hooker, Rock, M. Allen, E. Allen, E. B. Kingdon, Mrs. Doekrill, Mrs. Ellerm, Mis. Hempton, Mrs. Bell-Smith, Mrs. Grant, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. PercySmith, Mrs. G. McGahey, and the lion, secretary, Mr. A. Snowball. It was resolved to liold the Rose Show on Thursday; 14th" November. Various officials Were elected for the Rose Show, and also for the Spring Show. Members were asked to make a special effort to secure new members. The meeting was a most enthusiastic one, and everything points to a most successful show.

.Commissioner Richards, the newlyappointed Salvation Army Commander-in-Cliief for New Zealand, will be con? ducting special services in the Salvation Army Hall and Good Templar Ball, to which all are invited. The reception meeting to the Commander will be held this evening in the Army Barracks. The other officers as follow who are responsible for different departments of Salvation Army work will be present to assist in tlie meetings: Lieutenant-Col-onel Fisher (chief secretary), the Brigadier Divisional Officer, Brigadier Bray (responsible for rescue and social operations of New Zealand). Major Hoare (Young People Secretary, responsible for the Sunday Schools), Captain Suter (soloist and private secretary). The Commissioner and party have had most successful meetings on their tour, and we trust they will not be disappointed at New Plymouth.

Mr J. Black, secretary of the Taran aki branch of the Veterans Association, has forwarded us copies of the following communications he has received:—From the Hon. "YV. F. Massey( Premier).-—"I am duly in recipt of your letter of the 13th inst., enclosing copy of a resolution passed at a meeting of the Taranaki branch of your ascociation with reference to the Military Pensions Bill at present before Parliament. I note the views of your branch of the ascociation as contained in the resolution referred, to, and shall be glad to-bring the matter before the Minister in charge of pensions, in the hope that it may be possible to take action in the direction desired." From the Hon. 0. Samuel—"We Taranaki members continue strenuously to urge pension for each medallist as recognition though belated, of meritorious, services many years ago, regardless of pecuniary circumstances "now. I personally think also without regird to subsequent conduct or residence.'

At the Queen street Primitive Methodist Hall on Thursday evening a very successful social was given by the young men of the congregation. There* were about 150 present. Mr C. MeLachlan occupied the chair. The following programme was .highly appreciated by the company:—Pianoforte selection, Mr E. Golding; songs by Messrs J. Charters (encored) Furniss, H. T. Peat (encored). P. Tunbridge (encored); recitations Mr M. Scott (encored), and Mr 0. Pearn; banjo solo, Mr M. Scott; flute solo Mr P. Tunbridge. During the evening several competitions were held, and proved very amusing, being won by Misses F. Bra v. F. and E. White. An excellent supper was provided by the young men. The hall was tastefully and'elaborately decorated with ferns'and arum lilies. The committee of management, consisting of Messrs C. MeLachlan, H. Nicholls," C. Bellringer, and H. Rowlands received a •hearty vote of thanks for ■their work in connection with the effort. After several games 'had be;n indulged in the gathering broke up by singing "Auld Lang Syne."' The Good Templar Hall being engaged to-morrow afternoon the Brotherhood meeting will be held in the Whitelej Ohiireh, which has been lent for the. afternoon.

The services in the Whiteley- Memorial Church to-morrow will be conducted bv the Rev. J. W. Burton. The morning subject will oe "The Courageous Life;" and in the evening Mr. Burton will deal with the question, ."Was Judas a Bad Man?"
