A petition is being promoted by 'the County Council to the Minister of Land*, asking him to take the block of Native land, Tutaekuri No. 1, for close settlement. The block comprises 12,542 acres, of which 12 per cent, is ploughahle and the rest good hilly grazing land. The situation .of the property is in the W'aikaremoana Riding, two miles from Frasertown. A European had a lease for 21 years, and shore 15,000 sheep off the block, though he never did more till a n burn off the fern, not even sowing grass. Now it grazes about fifteen sheep, and is fast becoming a refuge for pest*. | The petition is being largely signed.
