THE BATTLESHIP NEW ZEALAND. London, October 15. The battleship cruiser, New Zealand, lias had remarkably successful trials, attaining a speed of 27 knots, the fastest rate reached by a battleship of her displacement (10,000 tons). A NARROW ESCAPE. New York, October 15. The steamer San Francisco, loaded with a cargo of explosives intended for the fleet's use, narrowly escaped colliding with the Government yacht, on wihioh were the Navy Secretary and other high officials. A disaster was avoided by a few feet. If the vessels had hit one another, the captains admitted' that nothing could have prevented the entire destruction of both. ! MILITARY TRAINING. J Melbourne, October 10. | The High Court has decided that re.ligious scruples cannot be pleaded for exemption from .military training, as there are no duties connected with the J system which non-combatants can perform.
