The House is discussing Mr. Hedge's motion censuring the Government for its decision to use kauri sleepers for construction of the Kalgoorlie-Port Augusta railway in preference to more suitable timber. It was stated that the New Zealand Government cancelled the contract for Powellising white pine sleepers, owing to the decay of some after two years. The process is still in its experimental stage. Mr. O'Malley, replying, said that the motive behind the motion was the defence of a monopoly, and gave instances to show that Powellising was an effective preservative.
