THE SOUTH POLE.
TERRA NOVA'S COMMANDER. \ A ROUSING SEND-OFF. | London, September 7. < Commander E. R, G. Evans, R.N., second in command of the British Antarctic expedition, accompanied by Mr. F. Drake, secretary to the expedition,' left London last Friday for Liverpool, where he will join the Federal-Shire line's steamer Wiltshire for Australia and New Zealand. Commander Evans, on arrival in New Zealand, will take command of the Terra Nova, with which he will proceed to the Polar regions to meet Captain Scott and his party, and bring them back to New Zealand. Commander Evans originally took out the Terra Nova, and was the last Englishman to see and speak with Captain Scott in the Antarctic. He was second in command to Captain Scott in the original expedition, but returned some time ago, accompanied by Mr. Francis I Drake, Captain Scott's secretary, and I other of the exploring party. [Commander Evans was accompanied on ( Friday by his wife and by Mr. Drake. (Amongst those present to see him oil were 'Mr. G. F. Wyatt, the British manager of the Scott expedition; Mrs. I Wyatt; Mr. E. G. IT. Evans, actingsecretary to the expedition; Mr. Bernard Day, who originally went out in : charge of the motor sledges; and Mr. ; Herbert Ponting, the photographer to , the expedition. . j A rousing send-off was given to the party as the train left the station, their friends raising hearty cheers and wishing them a safe return, and numerous other 1 groups on the platform joining in the demonstration. It is hoped that if all goes well Captain Scott will be back in London some time in June next.
From New Zealand Captain Scott will make the remainder of the journey Home by mail steamer in order to save time. Before leaving London, Commander Evans expressed himself convinced that Captain Scott had succeeded in reaching the South Pole.
