FIRE IN GILBERT STREET.

HOUSE GUTTED. About a quarter to nine last night Mr. L. Cock was motoring along Gilbert street, when he noticed that a house was on (ire. He motored down to the Central station, gave the alarm, and conveyed members of the Brigade to the scene of tho outbreak. Arrived there the Brigade found that the fire had a very strong hold in the back portion of the building, which was owned by Mrs. Bramlcv, of lntzroy, and occupied by Mr. S. d'A.'Grut, of the Public Works Department. it was not long before the Brigade had the fire under control, but by that time the building was practically gutted. The house, which contained six rooms, was insured for £325 in the United Company, while the furniture, very little of which was saved, was covered to the evtent of £175 by a policy in the State Office. The fire appeared to have originated in the children's bedroom in the back of the building. No one was on the premises at the time. Mr. Grut states that he and his family b-ft the house about 8 o'clock to go to the theatre and everything then appeared to be all righth. A large crowd of residents turned out to the fire, and order was admirably maintained by SeniorlWerge'ant Iladdrell, assisted by three constables .
