DENGUE FEVER. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, October 12. There is a widespread epidemic of dengue fever in Gilbert Island and a number of deaths have occurred. It is the first time the illness has visited the group. It is supposed to 'have spread from the Marshall Islands. MT. LYELL MINE. Melbourne, October 12. The returns from Mt. Lyell mine, from September 5 to October 2 inclusive, sfhow that 2(1,448 tons of ore were treated in the converters and also 8 tons of purchased ore. These produced 562 tons of blister copper, containing—copper 550,0001b5, silver 30,255 ounces, gold 743 ounces. WIRELESS TELEGRAPHY. Melbourne, October 12. The Federal wireless station spoke the steamer Argyllshire at Fremantle, a distance of 2200 miles, a record. NEWCASTLE HARBOR. Sydney, October 12. . A start has been made in the harbor improvements at Newcastle, which are to cost £120,000. The wharfage accommodation is to be largely augmented.
LABOR TROUBLES BREWING. Sydney, October 12. Trouble is threatened in the building trades owing to the employment of nonunionists. A movement is on foot to enforce preference to unionists. EFFECTS OF DROUGHT. Sydney, October 12. Rain is badly needed in the greater part of the State, and the crops are suffering from the continued heat and dry winds. The prospects of the potato crop are not promising. AN EMBEZZLER SENTENCED. Sydney, October 12. Griffin, cashier for Robert Little and Company, ilias been sentenced to three years' hard labor for 'having embezzled £*2495 of his employers' money on the turf in gambling. PLAGUE IN NEW CALEDONIA. Sydney, October 12. The (health authorities have been advised of another outbreak of plague in New Caledonia. Precautions have been adopted.
