V.A.T.C. MEETING. THE TOORAK HANDICAP. Received 13, 5.5 p.m. Caulfield, October 12. Bright sunshine, a bit on the warm side, attracted a large crowd to Caulfield to participate in the opening of the Melbourne spring campaign. No doubt the amateur club suffers through clashing with Sydney, which attracts Victoria's best horses, as well as the New Zealanders by the big weight-for-age stakes. The Caulfield entries fell from 542 to 454, while Sydney increased from 876 to 103(). Several Sydney trainers missed nominating for Flemington as well as Caulfield. In consequence of the clashing Lady Medallist wag ths only Sydney horse performing at to-day's weight-for-age races. However, the programme to-day had little or no effect on the attendance. Both clubs will find the extra stand accommodation too little to seat the crowds this year, which promise, partly owing to the influx of immigrants, to be the biggest at the spring carnival in its history. Governor-General Fuller and suite were present. The following were the results:—
