THE CARPATHIA'S CAPTAIN.

LETTERS AND PRESENTS. Writing to a friend in Wellington on August 13, Captain A. H. Rostron, of the steamer Carpathia (which rescued all those saved from the Titanic), says: —"I thank you for all the nice things you say, hut to tell you the truth it has made me move humble than proud. lam proud, hut it is not the pride of conceit, it is a humble and a thankful pride that I was given the opportunity to do it. Now don't judge rsmay harshly. Why should he be slated? I don't give my personal opinion, but I can assure you he is more to be sympathised with than blamed, and be just. I have received hundreds of letters from all over the world, and of course mostly from people i don't know, some of them beautiful letters. I attended the enquiry, and then the Cunard Company kindly gave me a holiday, and I wanted it. I haven't had any time to myself and was very tired and really done up. Everyone has been most kind and sympathetic. I have had a lot of presents, and I understand that lam to & et a medal and a vote of thanks from the Senate. "Many people were rather out of it as regards my silence, and I did not get any message from the President. 1 did 'not give any details, simply because it took us all our time to send the names and messages of survivors, and we could not get into touch from Monday night until Wednesday night, but all the same I did keep a very strict censorship on all messages, or eke we could never have done anything."
