LAWN TENNIS.

Tennis bids fair to be very popular in New Plymouth this season. The New Plymouth Clud's greens are coming on in fine style, and should be in excellent order for the opening of the season in the beginning of November, The asphalt courts are now being used by members. The annual meeting of the club will be held to-day week. The Fitzroy courts are also looking well, and members are putting in a bit of practice on the asphalt, in preparation for the opening of the season next month. The membership of the club has increased.

During the winter the whole of the Park Tennis Club's courts, tennis and croquet, were top-dressed, the weeds which threatened to seriously aifect the turf destroyed, and new grass sown. The greens are now looking very well, and are practically ready for play. The annual meeting takes place on Monday evening, when the date of opening will be decided upon. The outlook for a successful season is very promising. The club spent a good deal of money on improving the courts, purchase of new nets, roller, etc. Consequently, the financial position, whilst sound and satisfactory, is not as healthy as it otherwise would have been. The club, however, will not have to face any further capital expenditure, and in the course of a season or two the overdraft should be considerably decreased if not entirely liquidated, which has been the aim of the management.

11. L. Doherty has become a really great golfer, for he has beaten 11. H. Hil-

ton, the former British and American champion, and Fred Herreshoff, an American crack.

Tn the play at Chicago, which gave McLoughlin and Bundy the right to challenge Little and Trouchard, Hayes and Winston (Western champions) defeated Clothier and Gardner (Eastern) 0-4, 5-7, 8-10, 6-4, 6-4. McLoughlin and Bundy (West Coast) beat Smith and Norton (Southern) 6-2, 6-2. 6-1. Then McLoughlin and Bundy beat Hayes and Winston, 6-0, 7-5, 6-3. They were never behind.
