TURF TOPICS.

(By "Moturoa.") The curtain -will be rung down on the! Australian Jockey Club's Spring meeting J to-day. With the exception of Shuja j and *Paisano, the New Zealand horses have fared badly so far, and it remains to be seen whether they will do better ( today. Vice-Admiral remains in the? Ilandwick Plate, two miles, but last year's New Zealand Cup winner can have j no chance with Trafalgar and Duke Foote on recent running. Welcome News, Blakeney, Wild West. Blackpool and old Mundic figure in the High-weight Handicap (six furlongs); Shuja in the Waverley Handicap (one mile and threequarters) ; Sir Lethe, Simple Simon, Continuance, Blue Mountain, John, Hautapu and Kairoma in- the Dowling Steeplechase (three miles); and Shuja, Blackeney, Theodore and loli in the Final Handicap (one mile and a quarter). The utter failure of the Highden team at Randwick surprised most people, and even at the minor meetings Ermengarde and Bronze could not land a stake. This pair showed only indifferent form in the spring of last year, and evidently will repeat the trick this season. The loss of Boanerges in the beginning did not augur well for a successful season in 'Stralia, and the bearers of the "blue and buff" jacket have experienced bad luck throughout. They leave Sydney tonight for home. Paisano's areat effort under the steadier of 13s 81bs on Wednesday stamps him as one of the greatest ihurdlcrs ever sent across to Sydney. In a field of fourteen good horses the New Zealander ran Warwigerie to a length. The distance was two and a half miles, and Paisano was giving the winner 32 lbs. Warwidgerie is no mean performer and lias won many races on the other side. He finished third in the Australian Hurdle race, won by Uxbridge. Black Northern was

amongst the runners, but the distance and weight (12s lib) would trouble ihim. Rcumac 11.4, has not 'truck form yet, and Don Quex 10.7, was not class enough. John. lOst. would not see it out either. Handicappers on the other <=ide have dealt it out to New Zealand hurdle r s this spring, and it will probably have the effect of keeping our best horses in their own islands next year There is little doubt that the Taranakiowned Shuja started at a short price for the Sydney Handicap on Wednesday. The victory was distinctly a New Zealand triumph, Jockev C. Kmmerson in the saddle. After Shuja's forward running in the Metropolitan TTandican, liis connections could not find fault with the horse's impost —7st 21bs—in the Sydney Handicap. Not only did Shuia win. but he won handsomely bv five lengths in 2min 33sec. Considering that the Metropolitan Handicap was run in 2min 3+VoSec, Messrs. Matthews must be considered very unlucky not to have added that fine stake to their winnings. Only one first favourite. Hinemanu. scored at Napi°r Park on Saturday, 'and punten* must have had a very bad inning. "Whv weren't we there?" wail the ■"Bar A'ons." Smilax figures in the hurdle rac» at Waverley, and is reported to be shaping fairly we'l for a beginner over the schooling fences. , ..

The veteran sprinter Turbine has been put into commission again in view of the Auckland Railway Handicap. Weights for the Canterbury Stewards' Handicap are due about Monday, and "double-punters" are looking forward to them eagerly. Lady Lucy is to be mated with Maniapoto, but will fulfil her New Zealand Cup engagement.

Bobrikoff made a great effort under 10.6 in the Napier Park Stakes, but could only run third. On pulling up it was found that the crack horse was in a bad way, and it is very doubtful whether he will be able to start in the Champion Plate at the endi of the month. Nothing but disaster attends the Hon. J. D. Ormond's hurdlers, and it is doubtful whether the Hawke's Bay sportsman will be tempted to send any more of his neddies over fences. Napper, Mornington, and only last week Faunus came to grief at the illegitimate game, and each one blew out just when they seemed most likely to reach out and gather in the coin.

Serenity joined Trainer J. Peachey's team at Wanganui this week. The archdeceiver, can gallop fast on the tracks, but has cost his connections, no end of money when the colors have been up. Jimmy Peachey is a painstaking mentor and- it remains to be seen whether a change of stables will spell a change of luck in Serenity's case. The same trainer has Euroco looking in first-class condition, and no fault could be found with the lesser lights under his care. Kirkby, a rank failure on the flat, is now being schooled over hurdles. Kirkby is a full brother to Formby. but he never showed signs of it in his galloping. The apparent inconsistency of Golden Loop's running at Napier Park on Saturday occasioned' an inquiry, but the stewards did not upset the judge's placing. ' That Golden Loop as a hack hurdler and Golden Loop in open company an hour and a half later were two vastly different animals is only explained by the fact—too well-known to Taranaki sports,- alas—that the chestnut is more or less roguish. In the Taradale Hurdles he was ridden by H. Dickson, a new-chum, who only secured a riding license the day before the meeting. Dick" son did, not waste time in getting amongst the winners. Reverting to Golden Loop, his victory was simply one of those conundrums that are beyond the ordinary race-goer. At the price the ihorse could hardly have been backed to any extent, and considering the money his co-inections have lost recently nobody begrudges them a win. The New Zealand Cup will be run this day three weeks, and things are very dead in the betting market at present. Vice-Admiral, Bronze and Allegory are due in New Zealand next week, and things should brighten up then. Wellington weights should keep punteTs busy. Piriwai is well looked after in the Shorts 1 Handicap in which Crown Pearl and other speeuy ones figure. Patronale, Lady Menschikoff, Master Sylvia and other Taranaki horses do not appear to be harshly treated. No doubt a big crowd will drop out when the acceptances fall due, und punters should.postpone their selections until the fields thin out.
