MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Yesterday was a field day for the legal fraternity at the Inglevvoo'd Magistrate's Court, no fewer than eight solicitors being present. The Court sat all day, and some time was occupied in the hearing of the Inglewobd Hotel licensing cases, which, together with the reserved decision of the Magistrate in the Tariki Hotel case, is reported under other headings. . ... ,„ CIVIL CASES. v; -

Judgment for the plaintiff by default was given by the Magistrate' (Mr. W. G. Kenrick, S.M.) in the following cases: Henry Peterson & Co. v. Joseph Uhlenberg, £IOO and costs (£5 2s); H. Cheesman v. J. H. Dennehy. £3 Is and costs (10s); J. S. S. Medley v. J. E. Taylor, £-6 os and £1 6s Gd' costs; same v. J. Hopkineon, £4 19s 2d and costs (lis); same v. Charles Anderson, £l7 9s .8d and costs,. £1 18s Gd.

In a' judgment' summons ease, Robert Ward, who made no appearance. Was or-dered-to pay the sum of £ll 2s fid forthwith to F. J. Jpjohn. or in default undergo seven days' imprisonment. A large number of other eases were either confessed, paid into Court, or struck out.

THROWING STONES,

A lunibsring-looki'ng youth of seventeen years, named Bert Laurence, pleaded guilty to wilful damage to private property. Accused .and some companions were indulging in acts of larrikinism, when lie "let fly" with a stone at the house of an Ingle wood resident. The. missile missed the roof—its intended mark—and crashed through a window. After admonishing the offender, the Magistrate fined him 10s, witli 7s costs. HEAVY TRAFFIC BY-LAWS.

Reserved judgment was delivered by the Magistrate in the case in which Jas. Draper was charged that he did on June 25 drive a traction engine on the Egmont road contrary to the provisions of the Moa Road Board's heavy traffic by-laws.

In finding the defendant guilty and fining him £2 with costs ( £3 12s), the Magistrate said: "By-laws nre made for the good of the public, and should not be declared bad as a whole without the strictest proof being given." Mr. H. Thomson appeared for the Board, and Mr.' K. Spence for the defendant.
