TURF TOPICS. j (By "Moturoa.") Prince Soult was scratched for all en- «• gagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting at 11.45 a.m. yesterday. The Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting will be continued at Randwick to-day, the principal event being the Craven Plate, of 2000 sovs., run over a ■mile and a quarter. Bronze, Ermengarde and Vice-Admiral were entered for the race, but on Monday's form can have little chance with the cracks, Duke Foote, Malt King and Aurofodina. Paisano, Continuance, Black Northern and Don Quex are engaged in the Second Hurdles-,- Blakeney, Peirene, Theodore and loli in the Suburban Handicap, one mile; Ermengarde and Canute in the Grantham Stakes, one mile; Adelicia and | Gerberga in the Gimerack Stakes, four and a half furlongs; and Bronze, Blakeney, Vice-Admiral, Shuja and loli in the Sydney- Handicap, one mile and a half. The utter' failure of Bronze and ViceAdmiral in the Metropolitan Handicap lid aot altogether come as a surprise, though both horses had been shaping well at Randwick. Neither is much at home in a big field, and unless a horse can get into a good position early and hold it he has little chance of winning. Shuja, who led nearly all the way, ran a fine race, and in gaining fourth position quite surpassed himself. He should win a shorter race before the meeting concludes. Ermengarde again failed, -and appears to be the same old flash-in-the-pan. - Paisano's victory under 12st. 121b on Saturday 'was a meritorious one. The old horse must now be right at his best. Sir Lethe and Continuance looked good enough for the First Steeplechase on Monday, but last week's Sydney papers correctly tipped United Kingdom to beat the pair. United Kingdom ran second in the V.R.C. Grand National Steeple with 9st 61b, and was pitch-forked into the Randwick Steeple with lOst. Sir Lethe carried lOst 131b, and Continuance 12st 71b.
Beragoon, winner of the Breeders' Plate, claims the New Zealand-bred Multiform as sire, and was generally tipped to win the race. Adelicia was not expected to prove dangerous, but Mr. E. J. Watt's Athenic should have run better. Early two-year-old form is very contradictory across the other side, .so much depending on a good start in big fields, and the New Zealand-owned ones may do better in the Gimcrack Stakes.
Yesterday's cablegram that Royal Scotch was sold for £2OOO, and an additional £IOOO if he won the Caulfield Cup looks too good to be true. Also Ireland's price, £IOOO. Both horses would do remarkably well sold at the prices mentioned, which are just about double what they would fetch in their own country.
