GENERAL CABLES.

THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE PROTEST By Cable—Press Association—Oopyrigkt. Received 8, 12.45 a.m. Sydney, October 7. Lord Denman has vacated Government House and departed for Melbourne. A gathering of many thousands, organised by the Citizens' Committee as a protest against the Government's action over Government House, farewelled the Denmans at the station. The Lord Mayor read an address of profound regret and indignation at the series of events which had culminated in their departure without any definite announcement of their return. He declared that the action of the Government was condemned by an overwhelming majority of the people. Lord Denman, in a farewell message, said that he regretted, on personal grounds, leaving Sydney, and also on public grounds, because it seemed right that the Governor-General should have some permanent connection with the parent State of the Commonwealth.

A BOATING FATALITY. •Sydney, October 7. A boat containing a picnic party of ten capsized in the harbor while they were changing places. Mesdames Bain, Webster and Miss Hodges were drowned, but the others were rescued in an exhausted condition.
