MIMI-MOKAU ROAD
j Tke state of the Mimi-Mokau road, again came before the Clifton County OounciL on Friday, .when, a,letter was received from Mr. A. G. Crawford (mail ' contractor), who drew the councillors' attention to the state pt the-road just beyond the metal ,at TJruti, and asked, if something could be done. "We have," he continued, "been pulling through for many months now, smashing things, etc., at great, cost to myself, and no attempt nas been made to do a litle to improve the Toad. ■ As I pay two tolls and rates, we should have the fair thing. The main road for miles is going to pieces and the sunfaceman has nothing to patch it up with. It is nearly time we got our engineer on the job again, as it. would mean njany pounds saved by so doing. The Uruti representatives do not seem to bother much, bogs' or 'no bogs." Cr. Bower, one of the Uruti representatives, said that they could do nothing to this' piece of road. They must depend on Providence sending decent weather. Ho understood, too, that a settler'was driving 00 cows along the road three or four times a day, which did not improve it. Could they, he. asked, compel that man to keep his cattle off the road, which, he admitted, was pretty j deep at present? ' Councillors said the settler had as rriucJi right to drive the cows to milk as ] anyone else. ' Cr. Sullivan said that he had done 1 what he could to the rpad, and instanced a letter which had been received from the Minister of Public Works. He had. last summer suggested, fascining this bad portion of the road, but the coach-driver objected to it.' ••.'i'*"?isSß| It was resolved to inform Mr,'Crawford that the Council regretted that it could not do anything to the road at present, but it was intended, to metal it as soon as possible. It was also resolved to refer him to the Minister of Public Works and also to inform him that the representatives; of the riding were fully alive to its requirements. The Public Works Department acknowledged receipt of the Council's request that the Minister should promise that the sum of £I2OO would be provided for immediate expenditure on the Mimi-Mokau road. In reply, the Department stated that the representations of the Council as to the necessity of continuing that work had been noted and would receive the Minister's careful consideration when the Public Works Estimates for the current financial year were being compiled. The Minister, however, regretted that until the Esti-' mates were finally considered and presented to Parliament he was unable to give the Council any understanding on the matter. }
