TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa") A London cablegram states that Frank Wootton denies the rumor of his retirement from the saddle. The Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting will be continued at Randwick to-day, the principal events to come up for decision being the Metropolitan Handicap, of 4000 sovs., run over a mile and a half; the Clibborn Stakes, of 1000 sovs., one mile and a furlong; and the Breeders' Plate (for two-year-olds), of 1500 sovs., five furlongs. The field for the Metropolitan Handicap will include a fair number of New Zealand-bred horses, the following being amongst those to accept: Vice-Admiral 8.13, Bronze 8.9, Necktie 7.2, Shuja 6.11, and Blakeney 6.7. Recent Sydney files state that Vice-Admiral, Bronze and Shuja have been galloping well, and should they strip fit and well they may have to be reckoned with to-day. Ermengarde is set down to contest the Shorts Handicap, six furlongs, and I her running will be full of interest to New Zealanders. Welcome News, Blakeney and Theodore figure in the same race. The "Highden" two-year-old fillies have been doing well at Randwick, and will be given a flutter in the Breeders' Plate. The entries for the First Steeplechase (two miles and a half) read like a New Zealand race-eard. Sir Lethe, Continuance, Simple Simon, Blue Mountain, Hautapu and Kairoma are all in, and the pick: of the crowd (probaWy Sir Lethe or Continuance) may be hard to beat.
