DIRECT CABLES. By Cable—Press Association—CopyrigJit. Sydney, October 4. It is expected that the direct cable from Sydney to Auckland will be opened on December 1. The laying of the new cable will commence about November 9, immediately after'the arrival of the Silvertown, which conveys it from England. In the meantime the Iris will extend the Brisbane-Doubtless Bay cable to Auckland.
AX EARTHQUAKE. Sydney, October 4. The seismograph in the observatory recorded a large earthquake, probably submarine, on the morning of September 30. It is estimated that the centre was 5500 miles from Sydney. ' A PERILOUS CRUISE. Sydney, October 4. The yawl Sea Queen, whose length over all is 25ft, with a crew of three, left Yokohama on a'cruise of the world via the Marshall Islands, Australia, New Zealand, India, Suez, England, North Atlantic, Panama, the Cocos Islands, thenee to Japan.
