is now training and riding hurdlers in Adelaide. Clarence, of the classic "counting house"—l don't think—is a much travelled joekster. Altcar was not raced at Hastings, but will b"e amongst the runners in the Railway Handicap at Napier Park. The bearer of the "all cerise" jacket is pretty smart over a short course, and should be benefited by Marton and Wangaaiui racing.
The Hawke's Bay Guineas was a match between Bon Ton (Boniform —Class) and Haskayne. There was not a length between tihe pair at any part of it, and they Taced about abreast from the distance to the judges box. First one and then the other appeared to have the advantage, and botli colts finished gamely. The judge said, "Bon Ton, by half a head!" and the mile was run in lmin. 42y z sec. It was a great go. The •Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting opens at Randwick to-day. New Zealand-bred horses figure largely amongst the entries, and include Pai«a««, Pakau, Black Northern, Continuance, Don Quex, John and Reumac in the First Hurdles (two miles); Allegory and Monoplane in the Trial Stakes (one mile and a half); Shuja and Blakenev in the Epsom Handicap (1 mile); Bronze and ViceAdmiral in the Spring Stakes (one mile J and a half); and Welcome News, Blakeney, Peirene, Theodore and Necktie in the Kensington Handicap (7 furlongs). The Epsom-Handicap always provides a great race, and favorites for to-day's contest a-re Cisco, Popinjay, Jolly Beggar and Sunlike. Shuja has only 7st. to carry, and with a fair run should "do us proud." Messrs. Matthew's horse has been doing well during the past few weeks in Sydney. Blalceney is weighted at Gst. 01b. Ermengarde was in J;lie Epsom with 7st. 71b., but recent running was all against lier staying the distance, and it is now certain that she will not be produced until Monday, when she .will contest the Shorts Handicap, run. over six furlongs. The Highden two-year-olds, A Felicia, and Gerberga, are reported to lie l great 'heart, but they will have ,to be, top-notchers to live [with the torrid youngsters at Rand wick. Bronze is; go-, ing splendidly, and will start in j the' Spring Stakes, to-day and in the Metropolitan Handicap on Monday. ' In New Zealand it is wonderful :the improvement a horse can make between one day (when he is neglected on;the lote) and the next (\\;hcn the money flows in like a ".mountain. torrent), and such thing's are of such common occurrence that stewards rarely trouble to'ask questions. In New-South Wal«s it is dif-, fcrent, as - 'the recent'' Maltchester >:disqualifies: lion goes tp prove. On the 14th 1 nit. Maltchester started at Randwick at any old price,, and finished nparly ]ast. On the 21st the horse was .produced at Rjosehill .and hacked 'down to fi,rst favor-' ite. Needless bo ; say Maltcli ester Y'on, and won decisively. ■ Then the AjJ.C. stewards got to work, and 1 ihorse, joint' 'owners and'jockey were put-out! for twelve months. The Dominion requires' I stipendiary stewards, and what is. tlie I matter with importing a few of the AIJ.C. I gentleniert to fill.'the ■billets,?\ They j arc alive; there is no doubt abo*t it. j , . Moonbria broke down last and could not start in the Hawke's Bay Guineas. St. Paul (2) and Gluten (2) were most 6uccessful of the others.
Slerry Roe received a bad gTuelling on the trip down from Auckland, and was just beaten at the finish for the Hastings Stakes by Mr. Watt's Tatterley. Tatterlev is by Birkenhead—Tatters, and after being left slightly finished very strongly under pressure. He should prove a worthy substitute for Jason, who lias gone wrong. Punters who have been taking lons odds about Our King for Riccarton engagements, iook like losing their coin. It is now stated that the big colt will take 1 on .the Great Northern Guineas at Ellcrslie next month. i Trainer E. J. Rae led in four winners at Avondale: Bleriot (2). Waiovrera and Merry Roe. She was done with half a mile from home; and finished a long way back. Faumifi is reported to have had a bad run in the Hack Rurdles- at Hastings, and did well to get into third place. The shorter distance at Napier to-day should suit him better. Bleriot's victory in the iAvondale Guineas is lauded bv northern writers'as full of merit. The filly was bard 'held all the way. and at the finish was fairlv pulling Buchanan out of the saddle. BobrikofT lost ground at the start foi; the six furlongs race at Hastings on Wednesday, but made up a lot of ground and finished up well. Should he score in the Napier Park Stakes, the victory would be received with enthusiasm. Jockey A. McFlynn was in good form at the Avondale meeting, riding the winners of three jumping races. He left on Monday for Sydney to pilot Black Northern in his engagements at the A.J.C.

As the name suggests, the latter is a daughter of Oonoral Average. She races in 'Mr. C. Lagor's colors. One of the conundrums of handicapping is the light weight always against Cork's name. The brown son of "XTcrriwce and' Float is always dangerous over a mile and a quarter, nnd runs consistently. After running well at Danncvirke, Cork won the Spring Handicap at Hastings in convincing ftyle. nnd his connections threw in for a good win. The Royal Fusilier colt Ratblra is reckoned by Melbourne sports to be the most promising three-year-old in Victorn. Though not engaged in the A..T.C. Derby, the New Zealandcr still remains in the. V.R.C. Derbv. and is one of the popular selections for that event. On Wangantti form. 33011 in should not. want for hackers if saddled up for the Taradale Hurdle".
