WAITARA NEWS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The usual monthly meeting was held on Wednesday evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Batfcenbury, Black, Langman, Spurdlc, and Kleimer. On the motion of Councillors Rattenbury and Black, leave of absence was granted to Councillor Tate, and an expression of regret passed that illness prevented his attendance. An apology was received for the absence of Councillor Birdling.
Mr. Farmer waited on the Council re diversion of water from his property near the newly 'erected culvert.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee to report at next meeting. Mr. Waata Hipanga applied on behalf of the. Atiawa Sports-Club for the lease of a portion of Manukorihi street the Club making a sports ground on Manukorihi Hill.—Left in the hands of the Works Committee to confer with the Borough solicitor and report at next meeting. The Stratford County Council and Masterton Pipe Company wrote re manufacture of cement pipes,—Held over till next meeting. The Crovvn Lands Commission advised that the Board ooukl not. vest in the Council a reserve on the west side for cemetery purposes, and that they intended to offer the same for lease. The Harbour Board asked that the Council's et&il' be permitted to do some road work for the Board. His Worship reported that as the matter was urgent he had given the necessary instructions. —The Mayor's action was confirmed. An application for some work is Strange street by Mr. Prosser was referred to tine Works Committee. An application for a light to be erected at the corner of Carey and Hutchins streets was Teferred to' the Lighting Committee, and a resolution generally regarding lighting, that the Committee interview Ma 1 . Andrews was passed. The Council went into committee to consider a letter r rom builders rc the Inspector. A matter of a disputed plot at the cemetery was referred to the Cemetery Committee to report at next meeting. An application by W. Hipanga and I, Lindsay for a refund of cost of piping laid down by them on private property was not granted. An application for improvements to Blake street from residents was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
The Engineer's report was read, and on his recommendation it was resolved to call tenders for the balance of street works.
The Overseer's and, Foreman's report were read, the Jatter calling attention to persons riding and driving _ stock on footpaths—The foreman was instructed to report the names of anyone offending. Cr. Spnrdle's name was added to the Library Committee. It was resolved to allow half wages to one of the Council's employees who was indisposed. H. Walker was appointed collector of native rates at a commission of 10 per cent. ....
The Ranger is to ;>e advised to impound any stock found on the Camp Reserve. It was resolved to .return the unexpended drainage loan. Accounts amounting to £531 (Is 10d were passed for payment.
