A CONFERENCE POSTPONED.

Christchurch, October *2. At the last meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Farmers' Union, the president (Mr. G. Sheat) announeed that a conference would be held to-day to discuss the whole question of homes for country workers. The conference was to have been held in the Provincial Council Chamber, but empty desolation wa« nil that met the gaze of the reporter. Enquiries made among officials of the Land and Survey and Agricultural Departments did not result in much enlightenment, but it was ascertained that Mr. Lomas (Secretary for Labor), wh» was to have addressed the meeting, was on his way to Auckland. . Later on Mr. Sheat was seen, and he explained thai he had received a letter from Mr. G. W. Leadley to the effect that Mr. who had asked the write to make all the necessary arrangements for the conference, had suddenly announced his inability *to attend the meeting, no reasooß being given. Mr. Leadley was apparently a little disgusted -with the bungling of tho affair, and hinted that someone else could undertake the job next time, As a consequence, the conference has been postponed indefinitely.
