Mr. Miolmel Marquis, of Chris tchureh is on a visit to New Plymouth. •Mr. J. Hopkins arrived last night to make arrangements for the appearand in New Plymouth next week of Mr. Scott-Leslie, the eminent monologue entertainer, and his English company. A special meeting of the Otago Education Board was held last night to appoint a principal of the Training CoUeL in succession to Professor White. Nine applications had been received from various parts of the Dominion, and the Board decided to appoint Mr. E. Pinder, at present head-master of the Kotmal School.—Press Association.
A very old resident of Poverty Bay Mr .William Matthew Kirk, died yesterday afternoon after a long and painful illness. Mr. Kirk fought throughout the Maori wars, taking part in the engagements at Wliakatane and in the Waikato, and later was a member of the foreo which opposed the Hauhaus i» Poverty Bay. The deceasod was & wide- 1 lv respected man. For the past twentyfire years be kept a general store at T'j Arai. He leaves a widow, five song, anvt two daughters.
