MINERS' WAR.

Salt Lake City, September 24,
The copper miners' strike is threatening to give rise to a battle between the 4000 strikers and the sheriff's forces. The whole camp is convulsed, and trouble is expected hourly. The township of Bingham, fifteen miles away, is practically in a state of war. All through last night and this morning the foreigners among the strikers worked furiously digging trenches and throwill" up breastworks around the mines. Armed pickets l.ave been posted. Desultory firing has taken place along the line of trenches, and especially near the Utah Copper Mines Corporation's properties, where more than 100-0 strikers had fortified themselves. No one has yet been wounded. The sheriff' has appointed 250 more deputies, and has them.' ready under anns in anticipation of a sortie by the miners.
The Governor of the State has refused to call out the troops until he lias made an attempt personally to persuade the strikers to surrender.
It is reported that President Moyer, of the Western Federation of Miners, who is handling the strike, will confer with the governor.
The most alarming feature of the struggle is that the strikers have captured' the powder-house of the Utah Construction Co., and have now in their hands half a ton of dynamite and a krge quantity of nitro-glycerine, the accidental explosion of which would blow the camp to ruins. The men are now demanding a rise of one shilling a day, and are being backed by the Federation. They contend that the hours of work are too long and that the high price of copper justifies an increase in wages. The manager refuses to treat with the officers of the Unions, and declines to recognise the Federation, but says he is always willing to confer with the employees.
