LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Council met at 2.30.
CEMETERIES AMENDMENT BILL. Mr. Bell moved' the second reading of the Cemeteries Amendment Bill, which provides that land held in fee simple may be set aside as a private burial ground and controlled by trustees appointed by the Minister. This applied only to grounds used as burial grounds in the past, and not so used in the future. The second reading was agreed to, after a brief discussion.
AUCKLAND EDUCATION RESERVES. The Auckland Education Reserves Bill was reported from committee, and the Council then adjourned as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr. Houston.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
THE LAKE COLERIDGE STRIKE.
Replying to Mr. Davey, the Minister for Public "Works said that he intended sending an officer either to-day or tomorrow to Lake Coleridge works to report on the conditions prevailing there.
WIDOWS' PENSIONS
The Widows' Pensions Act Amendment Bill was read a first time.
Mr. Fisher explained that the Bill provided for the wives of inmates of mental hospitals, they now being practically widows, an alteration of the date on which the pension year commences, and for children born out of New Zealand during the temporary absence of their parents. The alterations were estimated to cost about £SOOO yearly. IN MEMORIAM.
The Prime Minister moved, in connection with the death of the late Mr. R. M. Houston, that the House record its high sense of the faithful services rendered by the late Mr. Houston, and tenders its sympathy to his family and relatives.
Mr. G. W. Russell seconded the motiox.
On the motion of the Prime Minister the House adjourned till 7.30 as a mark of respect for the deceased politician.
