Mr. A. P. Dryden, Chief Postmaster, of New Plymouth, left for Christchurch yesterday to relieve Mr. K. B. Monis. Miss Baker, who has been visiting the Old Country, is back in New Plymouth. Mr. Stewart is single, 28 years of age, and has had three years and a half experience teaching Latin ami Greek, and at the time he applied he. was assistant lecturer iii Latin and Greek in the University of Liverpool. He!is.a, foundation scholar at Fettcs iColleigOv Edinburgh, a Fettes' exhibitioner" and- John Welsh classical bursar. Mr. Stewart gained the university prize , for Latin verse, is a foundation scholar at.Trinity College, Cambridge, where lie obtained first-class honors in classics. , ,-,- In connection with .the .Post and, Telegraph Department, there is ,in existence a prize known as the Cray. Memorial, open to any officer in the service who suggests improvement or invents a contrivance for the, better working of the Department. The prize for the year. 1010, in the form of an engraved gold, medal, has been awarded to' Mr.. J. G. Pule, Chief Mail CJerk, 'Christchurch. who invented a machine for measuring the number of letters posted. This machine if) now in general use. Only two medals have been awarded since the fund was inaugurated some four years' airo, The committee havnig the right to sav whether any of the suggestions forwarded are worthy of adoption.
