ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

PINNED UNDER A TRAM. By TelegTaph—Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. The inquest on Frederick Smith, victim of the tramway fatality on Saturday, September 21, was concluded today. The evidence showed that the deceased tried to board a moving tram on the pole side, and was knocked under the car by coming in contact with a pole. The coroner's enquiry was principally directed towards ascertaining the length of time deceased was pinned down by the car before being released by the car being lifted with jacks. The evidence on this point was exceedingly contradictory, the estimates varying from ten to thirty minutes. The coroner (Mr. Cruickshanks, S.M.) returned a verdict of accidental death, and intimated that later he would add a rider dealing with the circumstances of the accident and the subsequent proceedings.
