Equitas dropped out of the Owen Handicap, and Makara was a slightly better favourite than Prosper. The start was a wretched one. Piriwai and Prosper shot out several lengths ahead of Makara, and Merry Frank and Master Sylvia were left.* Piriwai and Prosper led into the straight. Makara joined them at the half distance and won comfortably. Aratiatia, Postillion and Semaphore were best backed in the Railway Handicap. From a straggling send-off Lockwood and Semaphore were out on their own. The latter passed Lockwobd at the distance and won by over a length, with Avaunee the game distance away third. Postillion and Sanguinary were next.
