THE MACARTHY BEQUEST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. Mr. Justice Chapman to-day granted an application for a judge's certificate under the Legislative Act, 1908, that the objects of the Maearthy Trust Bill are unattainable except by legislation. It is proposed in the Bill to incorporate the Governor, Premier, Roman Catholic Archbishop and Mayor of Wellington under the name of a Board of Governors. The Bill will also make provision for the acting of successors of the trustees and for the appointment of one or more advisory committees. AN EDUCATIONAL INJUSTICE. ■Wellington, Friday. The Roman Caiholie. Education Board lias passed the following motion in connection with the refusal of the Auckland Education Board to allow a Roman Catholic scholar to take out his scholarship in the Sacred Heart College, Auckland: "That this Board endorses the action of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, Dr. Clean-, and the Auckland Roman Catholic Education Board in the course they have taken in endeavouring to secure for Roman Catholic scholars, the right to take out Government scholarships in Roman Catholic secondary schools, as provided for in the Education Act, 1911. It also considers that the ease is strengthened by the fact that such denominational schools as Wanganui Collegiate School and Christ's College, Christchurch exist.
CARGO PILLAGING. Dunedin, Friday. Owing to tlic piling up of cargoes at London and Liverpool during the industrial strife, tin' pillaging of oversea goods lias been excessive. One Dunedin firm the other day got a box consigned from Germany via London, but discovered that instead of £SO worth of 'binoculars they had got a case of straw. One side of the ease had been taken off, all the goods stolen, and the ease neatly repacked. LAKE COLERIDGE STRIKE. Christchurch, Friday. The strikers at Lake Coleridge declare that the official report by the Minister for Public Works is incorrect in several particulars. They deny that they objected to the engine-driver who was a certificated man. The secretary of the local unions says that the cause of the trouble is the engine which hoists the cage in the shaft, and which is not powerful enovish for the work. BOOKMAKERS FINED. Wellington, Friday. Arthur Law. Ike Cowan, J. Stellin and Dave Ross, described as bookmakers, were charged with breaches of the Gaming Act at the Magistrate's Court in publishing betting cards. The cases were the outcome of correspondence carried on by Detective Cassols with the defendants, under an assumed name. Lavv, Ross and Stellin were each fined £5, and Cowan £3. Leave was granted to appeal to the Full Court.
